[edit] Overview
The setting is an amalgamation of the Halfblood Chronicles book series and European folklore. The setting takes place on the island nation of Tír na nÓg (land of youth). On this island, elves form an aristocracy which rules over humans. Overall humans are treated as slaves or animals, at best they are viewed like a beloved pet, at worst they are treated as free labor to be used and cast aside. In the elven mindset, this is done for their own good since humans are so short lived and unintelligent to be left to govern themselves.
Elven society is broken up into a three duchies which collectively rule the isle. Since magical aptitude is a hereditary trait in elves, the most powerful wizards are all members of the duchy houses. Elven families with lesser magical aptitude hold Count and Baron titles. Almost all elves are a member of one of these houses, there is a growing movement of non-heir elves striking out on their own to form mercantile companies.
Humans are generally grouped into two categories, house slaves and field slaves. Field slaves represent a significant majority of the population, and perform almost all forms of production on the isle. House slaves are specialized labor, performing a number of trained occupations including hospitality, concubines, guards, and gladiators.
The elven lords are greatly concerned with two threats to their nation. The first is an unknown enemy from the northern highlands, called the Fir Bolg. Little is known about these barbaric monsters from the north, as they leave no survivors in their wake, nor bodies of their own kind. Few elves have fallen to this enemy, however many humans have been slain and elven estates have been razed. The second threat to the elven lords is a prophesy that the nation will be destroyed by a halfblood (half-elf) sorcerer. Based on past experience, the elven lords know that halfbloods are capable of magical abilities which exceed their heritages. To counter this prophesy, the elves have implemented a policy of using alchemical contraception to prevent pregnancies among their concubines, and systematic killing of any half-elf pregnancies which do occur.
